Processing Word Order Variation within a Modified ID/LP Framework
نویسنده
چکیده
From a well represented sample of world languages Steele (1978) shows that about 70% of languages exhibit significant word order variation. Only recently has this wlde-spread phenomenon been drawing appropriate attention. Perhaps ID/LP (Immediate Dominance and Linear Precedence) framework is the most debated theories in this area. We point out some difficulties in processing standard ID/LP grammar and present a modified version of the grammar. In the modified version, the right hand side of phrase structure rules is treated as a set or partially ordered set. An instance of the framework is implemented.

A Chart-based Method of ID/LP Parsing with Generalized Discrimination Networks
Variations of word order are among the most well-known phenomena of natural languages. From st well represented sample of world languages, Steele[13] shows that about 76% of languages exhibit significant word order variation. In addition to the wellknown Walpiri(Australian language), several languages such as Japanese, Thai, German, Hindi, and Finnish also allow considerable word order variatio...
متن کاملParsing Generalized ID/LP Grammars
The Generalized ID/LP (GIDLP) grammar formalism (Daniels and Meurers 2004a,b; Daniels 2005) was developed to serve as a processing backbone for linearization-HPSG grammars, separating the declaration of the recursive constituent structure from the declaration of word order domains. This paper shows that the key aspects of this formalism – the ability for grammar writers to explicitly declare wo...
متن کاملPartially Ordered Multiset Context-free Grammars and Free-word-order Parsing
We present a new formalism, partially ordered multiset context-free grammars (pomsCFG), along with an Earley-style parsing algorithm. The formalism, which can be thought of as a generalization of context-free grammars with partially ordered right-hand sides, is of interest in its own right, and also as infrastructure for obtaining tighter complexity bounds for more expressive context-free forma...
متن کاملHandling Linear Precedence Constraints by Unification
Linear precedence (LP) rules are widely used for stating word order principles. They have been adopted as constraints by HPSG but no encoding in the formalism has been provided. Since they only order siblings, they are not quite adequate, at least not for German. We propose a notion of LP constraints that applies to linguistically motivated branching domains such as head domains. We show a type...
متن کاملArguments desperately seeking Interpretation: Parsing German Infinitives
In this paper we present a GB-parsing system for German and in particular the system's strategy for argument interpretat ion, which copes with the difficulty that word order is relatively free in German and also that arguments can precede their predicate. In this latter case, the parser makes a provisional interpretation, which is checked when the argument structure of the predicate is availabl...
